Parentese is one style of talking to babies. It involves adults speaking in a higher voice at a slower speed. The language is simpler with short sentences and repetition. Studies have confirmed that speaking to babies in parentese helps develop a larger vocabulary through the first three years.
Now a study from the University of Washington’s Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences has found that parents can be coached to significantly increase the amount and effectiveness of parentese. And, babies will benefit.
