Their Voices Will Guide Us: Student and Youth Engagement Guide is an education initiative of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Our intent is to facilitate critical thinking, purposeful reflection, and dialogue around the perceptions and lived realities of Indigenous women and girls, including members of 2SLGBTQQIA communities. This initiative is designed to engage students and teachers in meaningful learning about the important roles of Indigenous women and girls in their families, communities, and nations, highlighting their strength, agency, and traditional responsibilities as Indigenous women and girls as well as to engage students and teachers in examining the impact of the high levels of violence that Indigenous women and girls experience. This guide has five main sections. The first section contains background information and resources for teachers to learn about Indigenous women and girls. It also includes information on preparing the environment or creating an ethical space for learning difficult truths. This section is followed by three sections for different grade levels – Early Years (early childhood-Grade 4), Middle Years (Grades 5-8), and High School and Beyond (Grades 9-12, Post-Secondary and Adult Learning). Each grade level section includes themes, foundational learning, sample activities, and expected outcomes. The final section provides contact information.
