The MALLA Guide
Date posted: December 12, 2018
The Manitoba Adult Literacy Learner Assessment Guide (MALLA Guide) for adult literacy practitioners was written for practitioners who have knowledge of adult learning theory and some experience in conducting assessment interviews with learners registering in an adult literacy program. It describes a comprehensive approach to assessment that includes three phases: Initial Assessment, Ongoing Assessment and Exit Assessment.
The 220 pages of this resource provide a detailed description of assessment processes and include worksheets and recommendations for assessment tools. While the Manitoba Stages Framework differs from BC’s Community Adult Literacy Benchmarks, there are many ideas in this guide that will be helpful outside of Manitoba.
The assessment tools referenced in this guide, Diagnostic Adult Learning Assessment for Beginning Readers (DALA), Canadian Adult Reading Assessment (CARA) and Read Forward are all available in the Decoda Library. If you’d like to borrow them, email email@example.com.
And, if you’d like to learn how to use CARA, Decoda has a two session webinar on Canada Adult Reading Assessment (CARA) on January 11th and 18th.
