Sustainable Essential Skills is a set of three workbooks and an accompanying instructor’s guide, designed to encourage integrating Essential Skills into technical training. The worksheets in the workbooks address competencies that are part of every trades training curriculum, enhanced with features that emphasize reading, document use and numeracy tasks.

The workbooks provide ready-made instructional materials and model an Essential Skills approach to technical training. The worksheets provide practice and strategies in topics that are often problematic for apprentices. The worksheets are arranged alphabetically by trade. Some of the topics are useful for more than one trade, but are only presented in one workbook under one trade.

The instructor’s guide shows instructors how to integrate Essential Skills strategies with technical training content. It covers topics such as developing tasks to suit the level of your apprentice, teaching methods for scaffolding learning, and designing activities to complement classroom lessons.
