Do your students need some help in finding something to write about? Have you ever tried using online picture prompts?

Here are five places you can start finding picture prompts online:

  1. Picture Prompts from the New York Times Learning Network includes both photos and illustrations with fairly short introductions.
  2. What’s Going On in This Picture? also from the New York Times uses newspaper images stripped of their captions.
  3. Make Beliefs Comix Fill-ins is a comic e-book where you follow the prompts and fill in the talk and thought balloons.
  4. Pic-Lits is an e-learning website that uses photography and words banks to support writing skills. This site requires registration and saved work is posted to the public gallery.
  5. 5-Minute Film Festival: 7 Video Writing Prompts for Young Authors is a brief select list of video writing prompts.
