Many literacy practitioners are familiar with the Grass Roots Press readers and workbooks. Among the most popular loans from the Decoda Library, these publications are learning resources for adults who are working on their reading skills. An added bonus is the Canadian content.

Have you visited the redesigned Grass Roots Press website? Did you know there continues to be a variety of valuable free content there? The links have changed but the content is still available.

Here are some samples of the hidden gems that accompany three well-used series:

  1. Photostories

Saying No by Linda Kit-Bradley – This photostory’s webpage has links to page samples and 11 pages of student activities to accompany this book. There’s also an audio recording of this book.

  1. Hi-Lo Biographies

Emily Carr by Terry Barber – This book’s webpage includes links to download a chapter sample and a 13-page workbook.

  1. The Active Reader series

The Active Reader – Foundation Level by Linda Kita-Bradley – We’ve mentioned the added content for this workbook before because it provides a concise introduction to working with beginning readers as well as a sample unit.

More advanced workbooks, such as The Active Reader 3, include a sample unit and extension activities for the units in the workbook.

This free content is a great source of teaching ideas and can be a real time saver. Thanks for continuing to provide this free content, Grass Roots Press!
