Family Literacy Week in Review

Date posted: January 30, 2015

As we’re nearing the end of Family Literacy Week, it’s a good time to remember that while we set aside a special time each year to celebrate learning together as a family, Decoda’s support for family activities continues throughout the year. Here are some free materials you can find on our website:

STEAM Family Fun Sheets  – Activity sheets for toddlers, preschoolers and elementary school children contain fun and easy ideas for literacy learning through science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

15 Minutes of Family Fun – The activity sheets in this series include quick family learning ideas for storytelling, daily routines, kitchen time, outdoors, and rhythm and rhyme.

LEAP BC  – These groups of activity cards – Move, Hop, Talk, and Food Flair –  focus on healthy child development through movement, healthy eating, language development and early literacy. All of the LEAP cards are available in French, Grandir CB; some has been translated into Chinese, Farsi, Karen, Punjabi and Vietnamese.

Reading Success at Home: helpful tips for parents – This booklet, written by Fiona Clare and produced by Literacy in Kamloops, is full of tips for parents on helping children learn to read and learn to enjoy reading.

Family literacy success stories – Read about the positive impact of family literacy programs throughout the province.

Enjoy the remainder of Family Literacy Week. Visit our Twitter page to see some of the activities going on in B.C., including the entries for our selfie contest (ending tomorrow!).
