Adults need certain skills to get and keep a job, provide responsive care for children, manage a household, and contribute to their community. Stressful experiences during childhood as well as stressful experiences for adults compromise those skills. The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University has produced a report Building Core Capabilities for Life: The Science Behind the Skills Adults Need to Succeed in Parenting and in the Workplace which combines research from the biological and behavioural sciences with practical knowledge from working with adults and families to describe effective approaches to helping individuals develop skills for coping with adversity.
