The U.S. National Archives has developed a collection of worksheets for analyzing the information in documents. Here’s a sample:

They all follow the same four steps:

  1. Meet the document.
  2. Observe its parts.
  3. Try to make sense of it.
  4. Use it as historical evidence.

There are worksheets for working with photos, written documents, artifacts, posters, maps, cartoons, videos, and sound recordings.

Bonus: Each worksheet is available in a format for use with novice or younger students or people learning English, as well as a format for intermediate or secondary students.
