How do I use the Benchmarks?

The checklists that accompany the CALB provide an effective way to document a learner’s progress at various points in the learning process. Your assessment tool of choice can be applied to the CALB.

How were the Benchmarks developed?

The CALB use a values-based approach, which starts with basic questions:

  1. What does literacy mean?
  2. Who is the literacy learner? What are their characteristics?
  3. What distinguishes “community based” programs from other kinds of programs?

The answers to these questions led to a meaningful and sustainable approach to monitoring and assessing learner progress.
