Happy Family Literacy Week!
I am so excited about this year’s theme, Let’s Make It!
There are so many things families can make together – stories, crafts, structures, music, and much more.
Each of these play-based activities can help children learn new words, count and use their creativity and imagination. They can gain confidence exploring their environment, using their hands and tools.
Our librarian, Tina, has created wonderful Family Literacy Week Activity Sheets with tips and ideas for three age groups – babies, toddlers and preschoolers.
Don’t forget to take a photo of the fun and enter it in the Family Literacy Week Photo Contest.
Communities throughout BC are offering a wide range of Family Literacy Week activities. Check our list of Family Literacy Week Events. Or, contact your local Literacy Outreach Coordinator to find out what is happening in your community.
If you are in Vancouver on Saturday, January 26th, think about bringing the kids to Telus World of Science. Decoda Literacy with our partners – Science World and Vancouver Public Library – will be hosting a Family Literacy Week event. Say hello to our team members, who will be in the Innovation Lab. They will share literacy information and a fun activity with you!
Be sure to read about Gabrielle, the young mother who has flourished through attending family literacy programs. I heard about her when I attended the literacy task group meeting in Castlegar, my home town, and she agreed to share her story.
I would especially like to thank the Ministry of Education for their ongoing support of Family Literacy Week.
Here is a special message from Education Minister Rob Fleming:
“When we teach our children to read and write we help unlock a world of endless opportunities for them to learn, grow and succeed. I encourage all British Columbians to join together with family and friends this Family Literacy Week and visit their local libraries to sign out a new book or participate in one of the many exciting activities being offered in communities throughout the province.”
Thank you to all our partners who make Family Literacy Week possible. Enjoy!
