One Mom’s Path to Employment
Charity Barbour attended a Family Literacy program offered by a group of community partners that came together to address a need in Castlegar:
- Selkirk College, which provides instruction for adults.
- Kootenay Family Place, which provides a child friendly location.
- Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL), which provides childcare and parent education and support.
Here is what Charity had to say about her experience:
I would like to express my gratitude for CBAL programs at Kootenay Family Place. I have two children and needed to upgrade my work skills in order to re-enter the workforce.
My three year old son had been diagnosed with severe Febrile Seizures and I was very hesitant to jump into my re-education. Someone told me that there is a program where they have an instructor for the parents in one room and provide childcare in the next room. This was perfect for me!!
I completed my upgrades, continued on to Administrative Skills classes at Selkirk College, completed my practicum at Kootenay Family Place and now I am utilizing my skills at a full time job.
I have met so many wonderful people who really are dedicated to helping.
Thank you, thank you – for the support, guidance, and most importantly, for helping me to gain the confidence that I needed in order to be successful.
