Workplace Wednesday: The Mentorship Project
Date posted: June 11, 2014
Beginning in January of this year, the Industry Training Authority’s pilot Mentorship Project provided over 60 grade 12 students with the opportunity to meet over five months with experienced tradespeople in order to get an inside glimpse into a career in the skilled trades, and receive coaching and support. This successful project took place in three BC school districts: Vancouver, Terrace and North Okanagan/Shuswap. Mentors came from a wide variety of trades.
The model of mentorship that met with the most success was monthly group mentorship circles where mentors and students met over facilitator-led conversations and dinner. In addition to learning about career information for a specific trade, students also learned communication skills, job search methods, and job interview skills.
