Workplace Wednesday: Economic benefits of literacy

Research has confirmed the economic benefits of literacy for individuals and for national economies.  But these benefits may not be immediately apparent.  A keynote address by Steve Reder at the recent Australian Council for Adult Literacy Conference reported that it can take 10 years to realize the economic benefits of improved reading and writing skills.  His longitudinal research has demonstrated that programs have long-term beneficial effects that are not evident in short-term accountability measures being used.  View the PowerPoint of his presentation here.

A news article briefly reporting on these results and literacy of apprentices in Tasmania can be found here.
