Online dictionaries offer some features that you can’t get in traditional print dictionaries. Many have an audio component that allows you to hear the words being spoken, a real advantage if you’ve never heard the word before. Another helpful feature addresses the question of “How can you look up a word if you don’t know how to spell it?” by offering suggestions if the word you enter isn’t in the dictionary. Some of these dictionaries also have learning resources on their website.

Here is a sample of some good online dictionaries:
dictionary.com
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
Merriam-Webster Online
Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary

And, then there are other dictionaries that have features you might not expect:
Visual Dictionary Online – handy when you know what something looks like but not what it’s called
Visuwords Online Graphical Dictionary – shows you how words are related to other words
