Playing with shadows helps children learn about the properties of light. Exploring shadows can be done using everyday objects that are readily available. And, it’s fun!
Here are some light and shadow activities to try:
Reflections and shadows – Science for 3-5 year-olds – Two activities, Exploring my shadow and Shadow puppets, from Science World’s Big Science for Little Hands @ Home
Rad Shadow Sketch – You’ll need a dry, sunny day for this outdoor activity.
Coloured Shadows – This experiment for older children from the Khan Academy and the Exploratorium includes further explorations. Science World also has a demonstration of Coloured Shadows.
Older children might also be interested in shadow art which manipulates shadows to create images. Find examples here.
