Science Literacy Week 2022
September is Literacy Month! Also celebrated every September is Science Literacy Week. This event is coming up soon and the theme is mathematics! From September 19 to 25th many organizations, including libraries, museums, science centres, schools and not-for-profits, will highlight media and events that share exciting stories of science, discoveries and ingenuity.
“Science Literacy Week showcases the many ways kids and families can explore and enjoy the diversity of Canadian science. It’s about each and everyone’s unique relationship with science and how they live it.”
Numeracy is an important life skill and mathematics is its language. We frequently use math in our daily lives, for example, calculating percentages for taxes and tips. We also use mathematics to drive innovation in some unexpected ways.
“…we use algebra and number theory to secure the internet and protect confidential information. We use statistics, geometry, and optimization to produce artificial intelligence, and advances in probability and analysis are being used to create revolutionary quantum computers.”
This year’s Science Literacy Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of mathematics and dream of where it might take us tomorrow. Attend one of the many in-person or virtual events, download the promotional posters, or the toolkit to help spread the word.
Resources
A recent addition to the Decoda Literacy Library is the third edition of The Young Child & Mathematics. Published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), this resource offers a fresh perspective of the mathematical value in children’s ideas and play. This book focuses on teachers working with children ages 3 to 6.
Another great resource from NAEYC is Where’s the math? : books, games, and routines to spark children’s thinking. This book includes 20 activities appropriate for preschool and kindergarten-aged children, recommendations for more than 75 children’s books that encourage math-rich thinking and investigation, and much more.
