Ready, Set, Grow!

Ready, Set, Grow! is a workplace training program to help prepare adult students for entry level positions in the Ontario landscape industry. This innovative project involves partners from industry, adult education, and employment. The free, Ontario government-sponsored program matches adult students facing challenges with local landscaping companies facing a serious shortage of workers.
In addition to teaching landscaping technical skills, the eight week course covers workplace skills including working with documents, using workplace math, job search skills, and workplace soft skills (communication, teamwork, personal management, problem solving and critical thinking). The course involves in-class training, practical training and a two week practicum.
Twelve students graduated this May. Some trainees were older, while others dropped out of high school recently. One graduate is Wendy Harper, a 64 year old who had to give up hairdressing due to repetitive strain injury. A learning disability and poor reading and writing skills made starting a new job difficult.
