Measuring health literacy

Can you measure health literacy?
There are tests and tools, and here are three of them:
- The Newest Vital Sign (NVS)
- Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM)
- Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (TOFHLA)
They all vary in what they measure and how long they take to administer. You can find brief descriptions in a We (Heart) Health Literacy post from Communicate Health. It includes a reminder that screening tools don’t measure a patient’s ability to use the information to make informed decisions, and clear, plain language benefits everyone.
