Written by Marilyn Smitshoek and produced by the Douglas College I-Care Adult Literacy Program, the I-CARE Breakthrough series is designed for adult literacy tutors to use. As well as a themed reading with lesson plans, each volume contains photographs, writing starters, environmental print, reviews of literacy materials, student writing, and word puzzles for adult literacy learners. They’re a wonderful resource for tutors.

Here are the volumes we’ve been lucky to obtain:

  • Breakthrough: ancient treasures.
Tutoring materials with stories and learning activities about the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, plus how to live a healthy life.
  • Breakthrough: beerology.
Tutoring materials with stories and learning activities about the history of beer, and childhood.
  • Breakthrough: our colourful streets.
Tutoring materials with stories and learning activities about street art and skateboarding.
  • Breakthrough: parks and gardens.
Tutoring materials with stories and learning activities about the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen and Nitobe Gardens in Vancouver, the Lan Su Chinese Garden and Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon, plus information about other parks and gardens around Vancouver.
  • Breakthrough: protecting the world around us.
