Hidden gem: Youth Literacy

Young people who face significant reading challenges are less likely to finish high school and are at risk of other personal and social problems. Research shows that comprehensive and holistic approaches to teaching and guidance can be effective in helping these young people succeed in school and in life.

From 2003 to 2008, Literacy BC in partnership with School District 36 (Surrey, BC) conducted a youth literacy project that was highly successful. The materials from this project have been housed on a separate website. To make the resources easier to access, we’re in the process of moving the project resources to the Decoda website.

Looking for brief, high interest readings for youth? The General Readers from this project are now available here.  Here’s a sample of the topics: Brain Science, Endangered Species, Multiple Intelligences, My Lizard Brain, Rule of Law, Utopia.
