Literacy is important for civic participation.

Today marks the start of Canada’s Democracy Week 2014.  All Canadian citizens are reminded to check their federal voting registration status online.

Elections Canada has produced a booklet that is a plain language introduction to the electoral system in Canada. I Can Vote! was designed for literacy and LINC programs. While it refers to federal elections, the information, including an election simulation, can be adapted for use with elections at other levels of government. It available free online or can be ordered along with other resources from Elections Canada.

It’s also exactly two months until local elections in BC. The Voter’s Guide to Local Elections in B.C. 2014 answers some basic questions about local government elections. It’s available in English, Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean and Punjabi. You can access it here.

A four day Election Day lesson plan for ESL literacy learners is posted on the ESL Literacy Network. It includes the activities as well as handouts. Find it here.
