message from the Executive Director
Happy Family Literacy Week!
This is the first time I have had the opportunity to introduce myself as the Executive Director of Decoda Literacy Solutions. I am very excited about leading the Decoda Literacy Solutions team in supporting the amazing literacy work that is happening in communities throughout BC.
We are delighted that the Province of British Columbia has proclaimed January 22-29, 2017 as Family Literacy Week in BC! It is a well-recognized fact that early and ongoing parent involvement in a child’s literacy learning has a positive effect on school success. During Family Literacy Week we strive to recognize the importance of family literacy and provide suggestions for fun and practical ways for parents, grandparents, caregivers and children to engage in activities that build and strengthen literacy skills. We hope you will enjoy sharing with your children the Tuning into Music: Listen! Make! Move! downloadable activity cards you will find on our Decoda website.
Decoda Literacy has also partnered with Vancouver Public Library and Science World to hold a Science, Art and Literacy Day on January 28, 2017 (11:00 am – 3:00 pm) at TELUS World of Science. Come by and say hello to one of Decoda’s family literacy champions, Aliza Dhungana, who will have an activity table at this event to show the importance of learning together through play.
Communities throughout BC are also offering a variety of activities to encourage family learning and play. Please contact your local Literacy Outreach Coordinator to find out more about opportunities and events in your community or click here for a list of some of the events happening around the province
At Decoda Literacy Solutions we depend on generous donors to help us fund and support literacy initiatives that make a difference to children, youth, adults and seniors in BC. Donations can be made through our website. Every dollar is appreciated and helps us to provide the means for the people of BC to have opportunities to gain the valuable literacy skills they need to be successful in our modern world.
I hope you have an opportunity to read, play, and learn with a child this month!
